This is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia. With a population of about 55,000, it remains a comfortable size, with many modern and accessible amenities. We always enjoy our visits here and feel it is a very welcoming and relaxing city.
The city is referred to as the "Whale Watching Capital of the World".
The whales certainly do appear to enjoy visiting this part of the world. The whale watching season usually runs from late July, through until early November. There are a number of whale watching tours with various features to choose from. The majority of whale watching tours depart from the Boat Harbour located in the suburb of Urangan.
Hervey Bay sits upon a beautiful stretch of coastline that provides for many kinds of water sports or just an enjoyable leisurely walk along some of the many kilometres of beaches. A paved pathway travels the length of the coastline along Hervey Bay's shore front and this can be enjoyed by riding a bike or taking a walk.
We hired bicycles and went on a 26 km bike ride (round trip) on a warm, sunny afternoon, stopping to take in the coastal and beach views along the way. There are plenty of places to stop along the way to take in these views, or to have a coffee break or a cold drink and an ice cream .....if you need to cool down.
Here are some interesting places to visit. Depending on where you are staying, some of them may well be within walking distance.....
Hervey Bay Regional Gallery where you can view works from local artists and touring exhibits.
Historical Village and Museum as the name suggests, it inlcudes historical buildings and a collection of exhibits.
Arkarra Lagoons provide an opportunity to visit an environment that brings together native vegetation, lagoons, a variety of birds and other local wildlife that coexist across this (almost 6 hectare) sanctuary.
Botanic Gardens is a wonderful place to visit and take in the lush environmental landscape, showcasing regional flora. Relax and enjoy your time here.
